Every year I make a New Year’s resolution to read 50 books. Some years, I make it 52 because I like how tidy that would make my calendar. It’s a good resolution because reading is both something I like to do and something that makes me feel accomplished and self-satisfied. It never really matters, though, whether I pick 50 or 52 as the goal, because each year I end up reading around 16 or 17 books, half of which are usually read on a one week vacation where internet is scarce to nonexistent. Because in the fight between my natural inclination towards laziness and doing things I like/feeling good about myself, Sloth wins out every time. In fact, Sloth generally hulk-smashes through all of my better inclinations, and with his trusty side kick, The Internet, productivity, even the fun, enjoyable kind that let’s me feel smug, really has no chance.
But the New Year is a time of deluded hope of self-improvement so I set out on this journey once again. This time I’m hoping to shift the balance a bit by recruiting The Internet as a tool for good. It’s tough to know where that wiley Internet’s loyalty lies, though. He’s the Severus Snape of productivity; you’re never sure whose side he’s on until the very end. And even then, the only thing you’re 100% sure on was that either way he was kind of an asshole. And awesome. And sad? That analogy got out of hand. Or DID it? Yes, it did. Be that as it may, I soldier on: this blog shall be the place where I record my progress: the 50 books that I probably won't read in 2012 and all of the things I did instead. A good amount of which will obviously be talking about Harry Potter. Also posting pictures of my cat barely tolerating my existence.
